Archaeological excavation at Thingvellir 2002-2006
The Institute of Archaeology in Iceland, on behalf of the Þingvellir Commission, undertakes archaeological excavation at Þingvellir. Excavations will also be carried out at selected district assembly sites around the country in 2002-2006. The objective of the research is to obtain new sources of information on the history of Þingvellir and assembly sites in Iceland, given that the information currently available is largely based on conjecture. The value of the project lies in the new information on Iceland's cultural history that will be obtained, for the benefit of students, tourists and anyone thirsting for new knowledge.
