The river Öxará that runs through the old assembly site at
Þingvellir is the main spawning ground for a portion of the brown trout in Lake Þingvallavatn. Every autumn it can be seen swimming up the river Öxará to visit its spawning ground in the river. The current and river gravel create good conditions for spawning of the brown trout. The life habits of the brown trout have been researched in detail and during this research, brown trout up to 20 pounds in weight have been seen in the river Öxará.
