Visiting Thingvellir in wintertime is just as rewarding as in summertime.
In winter you can visit Thingvellir on bus tours offered by
various tourist operators, or by rental car. If you plan to drive to Thingvellir, it is important to check with the car-hire office or consult the Icelandic Road Administration website www.vegagerdin.is/english for information on road conditions before setting off.
Routes 52 via Kaldidalur/Husafell and 365 via Laugarvatn are closed in winter due to snow. To make the popular "Golden Circle" tour to Thingvellir, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot springs, the winter route is via route 36, then 35 and route 37 through Laugarvatn.
Please note that the weather can change rapidly in Iceland. Weather conditions at Thingvellir may be quite different from those in Reykjavík, so be prepared!
