Archeological Survey in Thingvellir National Park 2010-2014

Thingvellir National Park and Margret H.Hallmundsdottir archaeologist have been working on a registration and surveying of archeological monuments since 2009.  The  aim of the research is to catalog and register all visible and known ruins within the park.

The ruins are drawn up by using handheld GPS units with accuracy to 10 cm and inserted into the Thingvellir National Park´s GIS system.  The surveying and registration work is done by the standards of the Archaeological Heritage Agency of Iceland and all data shared with them.  The work has now covered the coastline, the assembly site and all known old farms in the national park.

The project is in accordance with the principles set forth in the Thingvellir management plan 2004-2024 but also in line with the ICOMOS and World Heritage Committee recommendations upon Thingvellir´s inscription on the World Heritage list in 2004.
