Search and Rescue sponsored by the national park
Every year Iceland´s Search and Rescue go on their annual funding campaign. Thingvellir National Park proudly supports their effort
In recent years, Þingvellir National Park has purchased the large-scale version of the "Neyðarkall" (a charity figure representing a rescue worker) from the Ingunn Search and Rescue Team in Laugarvatn. Search and rescue teams are an invaluable asset to public safety. When emergencies arise, these teams are often among the first to respond in Árnessýsla, including at Þingvellir. With winter fast approaching, the responsiveness of these teams becomes especially critical.
Furthermore, this coming Sunday, the Ingunn Search and Rescue Team will conduct a training exercise involving rappelling into the fissures of Almannagjá to collect litter. In return for their efforts, the National Park provides financial support to the rescue team.
The rappelling will take place near Kárastaðastígur, where a bridge connects the viewing platform at Haki to the path leading down into Almannagjá. Litter sometimes gets trapped in the fissures there, making it quite difficult to retrieve.
