Common Snipe by Öxará river

The common snipe (gallinago gallinago) is quite common in Iceland. Though it is not always seen those who travel the countryside do here it´s unique and strange sound. This one which was noticed by the national park staff seemed a bit curious about the rail and river. The bird was in no hurry even though some of the park´s guests past by.

Often hard to see but not when it is just on of Öxará many bridges.

The common snipe migrates to Iceland from western part of Europe, mainly Ireland. It is estimated that around 300.000 snipes have their habitat every summer. 

It´s territories are all around the Iceland but most common in marshes and grassland.
