Marathon Run in Almannagjá

Unlike the popular song Running up that hill tomorrows run is going down the slope and into gorge Almannagjá. The marathon run is part of an event by "Iceland Challenge". The start will be from Hakið above Almannagjá at 08:00. From there, participants will go down the gorge towards Furulundur, then across the rift valley along Skógarkotsvegur and Gjábakkavegur east to Kálfstindir. From there, the route runs south to lake Úlfljótsvatn where the race ends.

The event should not have a significant impact on the experience of other visitors to the national park as the runners will go through the most popular area in the morning.
