From Queen to King
Fridrik and Mary visited Þingvellir in 2008. They were then prince and princess but now have the title Fridrik X.

The photograph exhibit Welcome to Þingvellir is located within the national park´s visitor centre at Hakið. There you can see photos taken by photographer Gunnar Geirs Vigfússon who captured the visits of foreign leaders to Þingvellir from 1973 - 2023.
Among them are visits by the now former Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, who officially retired as Queen of Denmark yesterday. Friðrik and Mary, who now are king and queen of Denmark, came to Þingvellir in 2008 and visited the old assembly site.

Margrethe II came here for a visit with other nordic heads of state when Iceland celebrated 50th anniversary of the republic. This year we will celebrate the republics 80th anniversary with lot´s of cultural events.
