Things to do

Þingvellir national park was established 1930. Today it is one of the most visited sites in Iceland. Is it both to it´s rich history and beautiful nature. Þingvellir was accepted as a UNESCO World Heritage site 2004 for it´s cultural value to the world. Please come and enjoy the Þingvellir either through our interactive exhibition, walking routes, guided walks angling, snorkling or other activities.

Visitor centre

The visitor center is located right next to the viewing platform at Hakið, where you walk down into Almannagjá.

Hiking trails

Numerous hiking trails extend all over the National Park. Outside the ancient assembly site most of the hiking paths are associated with the abandoned farms of Hrauntún, Skógarkot and Vatnskot, remains of which can still be seen.

Angling

Lake Þingvallavatn is a popular angling site in Iceland. In the lake is both brown trout and various morphs of arctic charr. The northern most part of the lake is within Þingvellir national park boundaries.

Riding routes

For centuries, the Þingvellir area has been a stopping place for people travelling around the country on horseback.
