Opening times

There is no advance booking for the campsite, and there is usually plenty of space available.

Spring (April and May)

Nyrðri-Leirar is open for campervans, and parking is done in front of the Service Centre. Electricity is not available.

Opening of the grassy campground depends on weather conditions.

Summer (June 1st to September 15th)

The campsites at Leirar (Nyrðri-Leirar, Syðri-Leirar and Fagrabrekka) and Vatnskot are generally fully open between June 1st and September 15th, with all of its amenities, such as electricity.

Sections of the campground may be temporarily closed during periods of heavy rain.

Autumn (September 16th to November 30th)

Nyrðri-Leirar remains open during autumn, but Syðri-Leirar, Fagrabrekka and Vatnskot are closed. The grassy campground may be closed during this time, depending on weather conditions, and parking is done in front of the Service Centre. Electricity is only available on the grassy campground.

Winter (November to March)

The campsite is confined to Nyrðri-Leirar during winter and spring, and visitors are asked to park their campervans in front of the Service Centre. Electricity is not available. 

The service hut at Nyrðri-Leirar is open year-round and contains restrooms and a laundry room. Showers are also available, but may be closed in freezing temperatures.

Senior Citizen (67+) and disabled. 900 ISK per person per night + overnight stay tax
Electricity (only available at Nyrðri-Leirar during summer) 1100 ISK unit per night
Overnight stay tax per unit (tent, camper etc.) 400 ISK
If you pay for three nights, you get the fourth one free and then every another night from then on.  
Groups (10 or more) get a 15% discount if settled together.  

 

Þingvellir campsites information

Campsite Areas

There are several campsite areas to choose from:

  1. Nyrðri-Leirar: Located next to the service center, this area offers electricity and is the main camping area. Both tents and motorhomes are welcome here.
  2. Syðri-Leirar: Just across Road 36, this area is also for both tents and motorhomes. It has facilities to dispose of wastewater and access to a water hose for clean drinking water.
  3. Fagrabrekka: A small campground west of Syðri-Leirar, only intended for tents. 
  4. Vatnskot: About a 10-minute drive from the service center along Road 361, this area is a secondary campsite for tents only, with more basic facilities.

Facilities at the Campsites

Both Nyrðri-Leirar (main camping area) and Syðri-Leirar have service huts that include restrooms, simple outdoor cooking facilities with sinks, and a brick oven for grilling if you have one. Showers are also available in these huts and are included in the campsite price.

Service Center Hours

The Þingvellir National Park Service Centre is open from 08:00 to 18:00 during summer months, and 09:00-17:00 during winter. Camping permits can be obtained at the information desk, by the entrance, on arrival. If you arrive after we close the service center, simply find a spot on the campground and pay in the morning.

Park staff also monitor the campsite on foot and accept payments. The campsite is monitored in the evenings during summer months to ensure peacefulness and quiet after 23:00.

Reservations

There are no reservations or advance bookings for the Þingvellir campsites, and there is usually plenty of space available.
